So, I've been wanting to do a Alfonse Mucha-inspired Ozma for a potential half sleeve for a while now. I finally had a stroke of inspiration today and this happened. I brought it into Photoshop and did a quick attempt at digital colorization. Here is the final, plus a few in progress and the actual sketch next to the Mucha painting that I was drawing most from.

This is lovely, and thanks so much for sharing your in-process sketches with us all. It's always so useful to see how other people work.

That is gorgeous!  Wherever did you get the inspiration for the OZ letters?  Is it something that was perhaps illustrated in one of the books?  (Sorry, totally ignorant about anything other than the classic movie.)  Or did you come up with that?  I'm asking because I've been wanting a super ornate initial like that as the center piece for a back piece!  Very cool!

They are based on the crown design that Eric Shanower did for his comics. Smiley There are some interesting Oz letters throughout the books, too! Look up W.W. Denslow or John R. Neill illustrations and see what pops up (As well as Eric Shanower!)
