When we decided to move to Montana, I started pinning all kinds of snow and ice activities and crafts. Well, it turns out usually our snow is too dry to compact into snowmen and snow forts, but it does stay below freezing for days on end, so ice crafts it is!  All I've done so far is make ice marbles like these.

It's simply a matter of liquid food coloring and water into balloons that are frozen in the freezer (or you could do it outside, too). Once frozen solid, remove the balloon and you've got a pretty ice marble!  As you can see, I like to place them on fence posts, but I have also stacked them on frozen bird baths and along the deck rails.

Last winter, I put a more thorough tutorial on my blog with some information about mistakes I made and how I corrected them: http://suddenlytaxidermy.blogspot.com/2013/02/lost-marbles-found-marbles.html

OMG. You need a life! Ooops. I see you already have one! What a wonderful project. You never cease to amaze me with your creativeness. Who would have thought of this one? So totally unique. And how easy. We have warmed up here, or I would try this. But I will pin it in my brain for next year. Totally cool.

Thanks y'all! I can't really take credit for the idea, I saw it on pinterest (that old story?), but I can take credit for these!  And we had about 3 times as much snow as was predicted when we last looked, so just about 24 hours later they looked like this.

I have an idea for another colored ice project... wonder if I'll get it done? Or started? Ahem

I like how it adds color on the white landscape.

Me, too!  Even though I love looking out over our snow covered forest I find I get a special "thrill" when I see the little blasts of color that isn't snow- or tree-colored.
