I was approached at the farmer's market last summer by a woman I'd never met.  She asked if I would be interested in helping with something she was organizing to benefit our local food bank called The Empty Bowl event.  It's a grassroots effort to fight hunger where local restaurants donate soup and bread while potters donate bowls.  The patrons receive a bowl of soup and get to take the bowl home as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world.  You can read about the campaign at http://www.emptybowls.net/.  I donated her very first bowl for the event that day and my husband and I signed up to make 50 more.

It seemed like a daunting task but we had months to complete them and I figured it would be really great practice on the wheel.  We're almost done (she is picking up our first batch this week, the event is now just around the corner) and I'm pleased to say by the time we're done we'll have donated 75 bowls!  We had a few awesome friends (including a fellow moderator  Wink)who also wanted to contribute to the event so we provided supplies and they got their handbuilding creativity on.

The majority of these bowls were dip glazed by our community volunteers, who seemed to enjoy their time in the pottery studio.

Here are a few closeups of some of my favorites.

All boxed up and ready to go!

We also agreed to take clay and our wheel and do some throwing demos during the event.  Thankfully, I'm a lot better at it having completed this project!

Bless your heart. What a wonderful community task. I had heard of this project somewhere before. Maybe from you, if you have mentioned it prior. How great that you added extra helping hands. I am sure new friendships were formed, as well. Your bowls look wonderful. That dip glaze method sure makes them shiney  Grin I would hope that the people donating would come back for seconds, and collect a whole set! And bring everyone in their family.

Thanks so much!  We live in a rural, high poverty area so hopefully the event will be a success.   Smiley

What a wonderful cause, and so many pretty bowls! I would probably have to constantly head to the back of the line, because it would be hard to choose a favorite. Cheesy

They did this here in Roswell about 2 years ago and the day they did it I actually got a "Mommy's day out" by myself (at 9 months pregnant, I deserved it) and thought about doing it for lunch but was too chicken to go it alone. My  husband wasn't too keen on the idea anyway. I think it's a wonderful cause and wish it was an annual thing but so far I haven't seen word of it again. That makes me sad. Your bowls are all wonderful. I like how they are all different sizes and shapes and thicknesses, no 2 the same! You are very generous.
