I made this for the tea swap recently.  It is a calavera/sugar skull set - a mug rug and tea cozy.

I transferred the skull images onto unbleached muslin, and coloured them with water colour pencils, which I then spritzed with a fabric medium solution before heat setting, to set the colour.  I made a larger one, which became the panel in the mug rug, and a smaller one, which became the center of the tea cozy.

I made it a lace up cozy, so it can be adjustable to the cup, but also because I think the lace up look is cuter.

I also added a little stamped metal tag with the recipient's name, for a bit of personalization.

Here is the post on my blog about the mug rug, and my cup cozy, if anyone is interested in more details.

The theme is great! The skull on muslin looks amazing! Is the watercolor washable since you heat set it?

I didn't try throwing it in the washer since I made it, but it survived the hand wash tests.  I learned this technique in a workshop I took.

Using water colour pencils or pastels, colour on the fabric.  Keeping some paper towels close by, spritz lightly with a solution of 1:1 fabric medium (Golden's GAC 900 is my preferred one, and I have not tried it with other brands), and blot with the paper towels to prevent too much bleeding.  You don't want to soak the fabric, or the colours will bleed, just spritz to dampen (unless you want it to bleed).  Then iron to set.  If you want intense colour, you may need to layer the colours and spritzing, or there may be more bleeding.
