I've recently spent three months in NZ (lovely country!) and was very inspired by an artsy lady I met at a market, she told me about her "technique" to use sharpies and aquarelle paint - if you make a boo boo, you can't change it so just make something nice from it. I used to be very artistic, but for the past..ten years or so I've barely painted/drawn anything. But now it was time for a change!

I've had a sketchbook with very nice thick pages for yeeeeeaaaars and years (embarrassing as I am only 22..). But today I made my first ever art journal and filled the first two pages (not counting the useless sketches i did in it forever ago) with pictures of typical Swedish winter birds.

The cover: old music sheets, acrylic paint, sharpie, decoupage glue and paper (the bird is a cutout!). The text didn't come out as I'd planned, but oh well. Pourquoi pas means why not and it kind of resembles the attitude I should have towards painting!

Your birds look very pretty. I think you are well on your way to creating some very wonderful art. Glad you found a gal to give you ideas to get you started again. And you say "cut out" like it is a bad thing. I have often re-purposed a project that didn't look quite right, but that I liked a certain element in, and included that part into another piece. And just changed things up to look better. Artist's call. And sometimes I just experiment, and love it so much, I include that wherever I wish to, too. I like your art journal. I think it has good color, and spunk.

I totally agree, the colours on the great tit are just so vibrant. And even thhough i love the bullfinch, it was hard to make it as pretty as the real one, they're so cute!

Well, what I meant was that I didn't draw it myself... but I still like it! I've been so inspired by everyone here that I felt I needed a nice artsy cover as well Smiley I'm working on filling more pages in with tons of animals and flowers (I'm a biologist, so it suits me), which is a really good way to procrastinate things that i should do, like clean, or study...

Your birds are lovely, and your post almost echoes my own from last month.... ! We have a craftalong post going for art journaling, if you want to join in and share along with us this year?  Keep inspiring each other!  Also, I am in Lifebook  2014 which is REALLY cheap for the amount of classes from awesome artists, so hoping that will inspire and motivate me too...
