So, I recently rented a house and I absolutely fell in love with this huge fireplace in it, but once I moved in I had no inspiration about what to do with it.. I don't know why they didn't add a mantel or something, but who knows...

Any ideas would be wonderful. Keep in mind, it is a rental home so I can't be drilling holes and making drastic changes. I would just like to have a not so boring fireplace.

Thank you!

Chains in the ceiling? With a mantel board that can dance. Mollys are what they call the stanshion that would put those up at the top. Explain to your helpers at the hardware store. They can help you. The shelf will swing a bit, so I would not suggest breakables. Unless you weight them down. Or stick them to the shelf to the board under the glasses. But the molly just makes a small hole in the top ceiling part. Easy to patch when you move. Just a thumb of caulking would fix the hole. Or just leave the dang thing. Next resident might like it there. Grin

Here is a sample. Google chain shelf. You can find more there. http://shakinstyle.com/wp-content/oldimages/shakinstyle/images/2008/01/22/pd103532_0108_hanginshelf_xl.jpg

Hope I have helped.

I am assuming you are wanted to recreate it as something that just looks cool, not a place where there will be fire?

High enough up, with this size fireplace...would not really matter. About 18" above the opening of the fire box. And a screen gate in front of the fire "window" for the sparks. That ought to do it. Pretty house. I wish I had one of these in mine  Grin Mantle or not, I would love it all the same.

I would get some slate or age some wood and suspend it from the ceiling with some old fashioned brown rope.
