Yes, it's called chenilling and you layer up scraps of fabric over a base color, cover the top with your top color, then stitch and cut or slash through the layers down to the base. Then wash and dry so it frays. You don't have to cut through all layers to get different effects. There is a great YouTube by Jamie Malden, she calls it slashing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HaPsMLE2FQ8

I like to machine stitch patterns then slash. It adds a lot of dimension and fun.

Awesome, thanks! Now that you mention it, I think waggonswest did an art quilt using that technique. I really want to give it a try, it looks super cool.

I did some cardboard stamping on fabric a little while ago, but it came out kind of subtle. Not sure how I'm going to incorporate it into a page yet...

The floer pages are both great. I find the first one very interesting with the varied backgrounds. It looks like somke sort of reflection in front of the flower, like a thin puddle of clear water and the grey part looks almost like stone. This is well balanced by the brown and words on the left side.

The backgrounds for the crocus began as a drop cloth/paper bag protecting my counter top. I did add some additional paint, gesso, stamps etc to round out the backgrounds, but most is fairly random. Then I made the book. Then I simply pick a page and work with the background to the best of my ability. It's a combination of planned drawing and doodling at that point. Working with the coffee stain or the images already on the page, then drawing around, incorporating shapes. Fun way to go.

i've been taking my time and slowly reading through all the pages that i had missed, so much information and inspiration! its a tad overwhelming at times...so i figured i would go ahead and post my first pages in this years book, i did them back on jan. first. i picked a word for the year and did a page inspired by that for the front of my book.

Cmarion3, your way seems like a lot of fun. I need to get back to my journal.

I have been derailed by allergy(maybe) and crafting and... Well, I shall work on one page during the following week and have fun doing it!

Solarray, I like the colors of your pages. The antique looking clock gives the page an air of something that will last forever that goes well with tenacity.

Wandw, I hope you will share your pages with us.

Great variety of pages lately!  I really love the ones with fabric!  I want to try incorporating some fabric and some of the other techniques people have been posting into my journal.  If I ever stop neglecting it!  I really like your word of the year, too, solarray!  That's such a neat idea.

I gave the cheniling a go with a specific image.  It has been sent to a swap partner, when she receives it, I will post the picture here.

I really enjoyed it, the image could be improved on but I was pleased with the outcome.
