I just finished our run of The Little Mermaid...I designed set and costumes and it was amazing!
My favorite costume that I designed and constructed is Ursula...totally original head to toe (see my post on the wig)...it just made me happy to look at it...hope you all like it!
The bodice is covered with cut up VHS tape and my favorite little detail is that one of the tapes was "The Little Mermaid"...love inside jokes Smiley

Wow. Wonderful detailing. I envie you. I have similar skills for costuming, but just haven't been a place where I could put them to use. You are so lucky to be at a theatre. Those look marvelous. I am so happy things turned out good for you and your troupe. Ursula is an awesome costume. The mermaid looks pretty, too. And I love the recycle with the VHS tape...who would have thought??? I have seen the snack bag dresses...but Little Mermaid tape??? Too cute.  Grin

Thanks!
I used floor underlayment...bought it at Home Depot.  It's a thin (2mm) polypropylene foam.
Pretty pricey at $65 for 100sq ft but I made 15 different costumes out of it including Ursula.
I made a corset style belt out of thick interfacing that I created using the duct tape and saran wrap method.  For each tentacle I cut two identical swirl shapes and then one long triangle the length of the underside of the swirl shape.  I then hot glued them together in a triangle...it reinforced their shape and they had great structure.  I spraypainted them a black hammered metallic spray and cut some circles out of pipe insulation which I sprayed purple.
Here's the underlayment

Awesome!  Thank you sooo much!
Whenever my craftster community shows me love it means so much more than when non-crafty people tell me something's good...you guys know what you're talking about.

This project has made me so happy already and sharing it with everyone makes me even happier Smiley

I just looked at every project you've ever posted on here and I can not believe I've not seen Any of them before now, where have I been?! Your costumes are spectacular! Way to raise the bar. If I start now my kids might have something half as good by this October, lol. If only they could make up their minds this early on, they change them about 200 times, ha!

Thanks craftylittlemonkey!  It all started so innocently and has bloomed out of control...the halloween costume thing gets harder to top every year but I love the challenge! And not too many more years before they won't be trick or treating anymore...but thank goodness for theater!
