This project is really two pincushions reconstructed into one! The vintage lady topper was part of a pincushion that my grandmother had packed away for a long time, and her fabric skirt was falling apart and leaking sawdust. I wish I had taken a picture before I deconstructed it, but you can get the idea looking here.

The base is from a pincushion that my mom blupaisan made for me a few years ago. It was also past its prime (I had not been very gentle with it  Cry), with the top fabric coming unglued from the base. It was dear to me because she had decorated the base with a map including Sapporo, Japan, which was my first big trip away from home, and an experience I still treasure.

So to merge the two, I ironed some heavy interfacing onto a little section of my chosen fabric, cut a hole a bit smaller than the statue's base, and buttonhole stitched around it. I then installed the figurine, cut a circle of fabric around her, and stuffed it as much as I could, gathering the edges to form a little ball. I weighted the base with a handful of pennies, and glued the stuffed ball on using E600 glue.

I'm glad I was able to create something pretty and functional, while keeping intact the memories of the two original pincushions! (I also found 5 needles the I had lost over the years inside the stuffing of the second cushion, oops!  Shocked)

Anyone have a couple extra felting needles? I'll trade for them!

It's so nice that you could save two treasures at the same time.  The result is a lovely looking pin cushion you can use for years more to come.

It turned out so beautiful and it's extra special that so many components came from other treasured objects. Be gentle with this one Smiley.
