It's been about 8 years since I had a Christmas tree and probably about that long since The ManFlesh has either.  We don't have a great place for one here without moving furniture around to awkward places or into the guest room or whatever AND as you know trees are made of sticks and our dogs are allowed sticks (at least when outside).  So... when I saw this material at Ikea in April, I bought a length and figured I'd come up with something.

I built a frame of 1x4 and 1x2 lumber, then attached Homasote board to that. Homasote is a recycled fiber material made as a sound barrier, but it's a great bulletin board material, too, and you see it used a lot that way.  Finally, I stapled the fabric to the sides and back of the wood frame, stretching with a similar method as art canvases (but with sloppier corners).

The ornaments are hung using 2" straight pins. I think we need some "us" ornaments; most of these are mine or ones I made him of various pets' footprints.  Also, we need a topper and I want to figure out some lights that won't mean a bunch of thick-ish cords or cutting holes in the fabric, perhaps some LED technology.  Maybe a bead garland, too.

This was not a cheap project, but cost about 2 years' worth of lot trees and half or less of a decent looking, full-priced traditional fake tree.

UPDATE! I threw together a topper with some things I had laying around. You know, like BIGFOOT!

Very interesting idea. I am sure our college dorm crafters could take this one and run with it. Even without the Ikea, I am sure they might paint something similar to a canvas? Even foam core for a backing would stick the pins into it. Quite a lovely job. I really like the concept, and easy to put away for next year.

Thanks!

It's not that easy to put away, it's 6' tall and 4'8" wide which I should've mentioned.   Roll Eyes  I'm going to buy a mattress bag from a moving truck rental place to store it in to keep it clean!

The fabric is from Ikea, so I am probably far from the first to do something like this.  The version they show on their website now has GLOW IN THE DARK SNOW on the branches!

I like unusual tree toppers be they big foot (or king kong  Grin).  A few years ago we had one of the powerpuff girls as our tree topper!

That's so awesome. The kids and I have a debate over the tree almost every year. We don't want a fake one because ew plastic-offgassing-lead-leaching-factory-produced-made-in-china crap, lol, but one of mine is not down with the cutting of a tree every year so... what's a girl to do? This year we have all the decorations strung up on yarn across the doorways and while it's perfectly fine I still miss the traditional tree. I'm going to look for or make fabric like this but I'd better build a collapsible frame because there's nowhere to store a big flat thing in this apartment unless I hang it on the ceiling :/.

I haven't got a tree topper of any sort but almost half our ornaments are either swaps from here or links I followed from here to shops and they are ALL so weird. This place inspires madness Wink.

ETA thought I'd check spoonflower, just in case. http://www.spoonflower.com/fabric/2583175

Thanks and great find!  You could do a quilted type number that could roll up to store.  And use safety pins to attach the ornaments?

I keep thinking about this... it would be a great display for crafting shows. I've got plans to make ornaments for next year, with a good solid free standing frame this would be a great way to show case those. Stitch on Velcro loops or hooks or something like that. I'm going to think about it some more Cheesy.
