I always feel so alone on these forums ... out in the middle of south dakota ... but, if I'm not alone, please say HELLO ... really loudly b/c I might just hear you!

I'm in central SD in Chamberlain. Would love to hear from fellow SD'ers ... and border states, too (NE, MN, NE, ND, IA, MT, CO). Smiley

I grew up in SoDak and my family still lives there (parents  and others in SF, brother in Madison), but I live in Washington, DC now and have for going on 20 years (ack!).  I couldn't imagine living back home, but I still get homesick.  My husband and I drove across the state last summer (family reunion in the Hills) and it was a great reminder of what a remarkable place it is.  Hope you're able to connect with other crafty folks back home, but if you can't find anyone in the offline world, at least you've got all of us in the online world!

Take care,
Lisa

I'm from Chadron, Nebraska. 'Bout 100 miles away from Rapid City, SD, if you know where that is. It's in the southwest corner. I go to Rapid often and have tried to find good thrift stores there, but the ones I've found are kinda... skanky? Anyway, I feel your pain. I feel quite alone (even though there are NEers on the board) because I'm far, far away from Lincoln/Omaha.   Sad

Hi, I'm from Sturgis but have family in Huron so we travel across the state several times a year.  We haunt all of the antique shops and thrift shops.  We usually stop at the Old West Trading post in Chamberlain.  Rapid City and Belle Fourche have a lot of anitque shops.  I sometimes find vintage stuff  like patterns, buttons etc. at the antique shops. Hey, Chamberlain, where do you shop?

I'm sorta a South Dakotan...I got to USD, but I'm actually from Crofton/Fordyce, NE.  (About 20 min from Yankton.)  It's so sad that those of us who are on here are from ALL parts of the state(s)...not close to each other, at all.  If you're ever in SF, they've got a great new yarn store (though I might be biased...my friends own it), and a SnB that meets Tuesday night at Barnes and Noble.  Give me a holler if you ever come down  Grin

hey, I just joined today and I'm from Vermillion too (originally from central SD)! I've been lurking here a while, but decided to jump in today.

Even though we have a Walmart opening soon, it sucks living here because we have to go out of town to find any good craft supplies (not that walmart will help that much). I drove all over SF last weekend trying to find Lion Brand Fisherman's Wool. Finally another shopper in Michael's helped me (after the teenage boy working there tried to tell me that they only carried Lion Boucle yarn--no offense to teenage boys out there) and I found it at Hancock Fabrics.

Have you been to the yarn stores in SF?  There's Yarn Knit downtown, and Athena's Fibers down near Minnesota (sorta/not really...that's just the best description I can do right now).

We have a Stitch n Bitch that meets up Saturday mornings at the Coffee Shop Gallery downtown; you should join us sometime!  We just met today; the next "meeting" is Dec. 17th.  (And I think the first one January is the 7th.)  You should PM me!

someone in Michael's told me about the yarn stores but it was too late on a Saturday to get to them. Sad I am going to try to get there soon though.

Hi, Mobridge SD here, used to be from east of Aberdeen (Groton) but moved a year ago.  Yarn here?  Lion brand fun furs and Red Heart (yikes).  I spin so I have my own stash of wool yarn.  Internet is good for yarn shopping too!  There is also a Yarn Knit in Aberdeen as one of the owners of the store lives just 10 miles south east of Aberdeen and has camels on her farm! The Sioux Falls store opened first and then she opened the one in Aberdeen.  Anyway,  nice yarns there.  Groton has a small store with some nice yarns and fiber but is only open one day per week and that is Thursday.   Anyone know of any other spinning and yarn shops?

Athena Fibers just opened in Sioux Falls, too, a couple months ago.  It's on Hawthorne I believe, just south of 41st.  It's in a very residential district, in an old Victorian style house.  I may be biased, since I do know the owner, but I like this store a lot better than Yarn Knit.  Athena has more "traditional," basic yarns, and less froofy stuff.  And I think they just go in some spinnng fibers.  Definately worth checking out!

Hello! I'm from Rapid City as well. It would seem there truly are only a few of us South Dakotans here. I actually stumbled upon this site while looking for local knitting or SnB groups. If anyone knows of one or might be interested in forming one, please let me know. Thanks!

Hi all, just wanted to jump in and say I'm from SD too, north of Sioux Falls, although we are moving to the Aberdeen area this summer.  I'm going to miss the craft and fabric stores in Sioux Falls.  Oh well, I guess I'll have more of an excuse to shop online...LOL

I went to school in Vermillion and even though I'm in Omaha now, I try to get up to Sioux Falls every once in a while -- I'm in mad, mad love with the fiber shop and the yarn shop and the fabric shop for quilters up there.  Mrrowr.  (There are yarn shops here in Omaha, but nothing that sells fiber for spinning, so I have to drive up to get a fix now and again. :>)

I'm also in Sioux Falls. I head up a Stitch 'N' Bitch group that meets Friday nights at Camille's. Any and all are welcome. Knitters, crocheters, cross-stitchers...anyone with a portable craft.

I had no idea there was another one! You should get listed on stitchnbitch.org!

I also teach knitting at the SF Michaels talked about earlier. We definitely carry more than the LB Boucle, but no fisherman's. If you're looking for anything Lion Brand in SF, the place to go is Hancock Fabrics. That's the only brand they carry! I know they have the fisherman's wool since I've looked around for yarns I can dye. Hobby Lobby and Michaels both carry Lion Brand also, but different selections. Like Hobby Lobby carries their 100% wool, whereas the only 100% wool Michaels carries is Patons.

If anyone is planning a trip to SF to look for a specific yarn, feel free to email me first. I shop for yarn WAY more than I should. The only place I hardly ever go is Yarn Knit. I love the service there....I just can't afford half of what they carry and I'm rarely in the neighborhood. Athena's has a great "classic" yarn selection and I drive by it all the time. They also have very reasonable prices. They know me pretty well in there. Smiley I just bought a GREAT drop-spindle from them for under $15 and they have a great price on wool roving as well. To top it off, Judy (one of the owners), helped me figure out what I was doing wrong on my student spindle!

Is there directions on the site on how to get there? My travelling does sort of depend on my husband schedule since we only got one vehicle(bummer) so i may not be able to make it all the time.

I know this is an older post, but I am moving to SD in less than 2 weeks (Watertown).  I can't wait!  It will be an adjustment for me - I'm a small town girl who has been stuck near a city for too long.  I need to get used to the fact that craft supplies won't be as readily available (Joann's in Watertown went out of business).

Haha..............I have already shipped all of my supplies up there - now I just need to get my butt there so I can resume crafting!

If anyone in Watertown wants to get a crafty kind of group together, PM me.  I'd like to meet some good crafty folks when i get there!

This is pretty late, so I don't know if you're still looking, but Bully Blends has a SnB.  It meets Monday nights.  Unfortunately for me, my Mondays are busy so I can't go.  I'm looking for one on another night.

I moved to Sioux Falls in November 2010 with my daughter & grandson ... I'm originally from Des Moines, IA where most of my family still lives ... but spent the last 20 years in the Houston TX area ... I'm waiting for spring to start exploring Sioux Falls and still do not know anyone or where anything is at ... yet.
