So - I have made lap quilts for my parents, and my hubby's mother and step-father, but never one for his father and step-mother.  The kids love going "beach camping" with them each summer, and they adore their grandfather's camper-cab that goes on the back of his pickup truck.  This year I decided to try to recreate in a quilt a picture of the two of them sitting atop the camper:

Original picture:

I photocopied it and enlarged it, and then took a sharpie and outlined the parts I would cut out to applique on:

Then started cutting out the pieces with double-sided fusible and putting them in place:

And so forth and so on:

I added fabrics to represent sand ('cuz they're at the beach), fishing ('cuz they do that there, too) and some rocks at the shore, as there is a rocky spot they like to go to that they call "crab island" that is only there at low tide and is basically some rocks near the shore that are uncovered at low tide.

This was my very first time doing free motion quilting!  It was harder than I anticipated, but I am happy with at least some of the quilting I did on it!

And here it is bound (used store-bought, as we need to get it in the mail soon):

And an obligatory shot of the back:

Thanks for looking!  It's not perfect, but I am overall pleased with the results!

Wow!  Thanks!  I clicked on the thumbnail on the community page without the slightest idea it would be mine!  The in laws were very appreciative of the quilt, which makes it all worth it!  Smiley

How wonderful. Even if it isn't "perfect", I'm sure it's perfect to them. You can tell that a lot of thought and love went into it.

This looks really great and I want to try this for a block on a tote I am making...

Can you tell me if you sewed around the edges of applique in the picture?

What I did for the applique was to put double-sided fusible on them, and then sew them down.  I didn't do a satin stitch - just a straight stitch right inside the edges of the pieces.  I am hoping that they stay well and don't fray too much when washed . . .

Thanks so much for your reply!  I would be interested to know if they fray as well.  I have only sewed a close zigzag but I can see how that would be difficult on something like this...I really like how this turned out and how you used the picture to cut out your shapes.  I am doing a mountain scene, a friend's view from her house and had her son send me a picture of it.  I'll post mine when I'm done.  Thanks for the inspiration!
