Polymer clay Magpie (well what other bird is going to match a black, white a blue themed tree? Wink.. )
id had the urge to make a magpie cane for a while, finally got there!
im really pleased with how well this reduced though the tail isnt as long as it could be and i missed the feet partly because i wanted to create a 'generic' bird foot cane i could then use to construct a number of other bird canes and because i wanted to try to limet the size of the cane. im still not comfortable reducing larger canes though im becoming more confident  Undecided
the diamond may be a little on the large side but i was reluctant to make it too small as i needed to drill a hole for the gold jump ring  Undecided the oramernt is roughly 7cm/7cm  so the diamond was a fiddle to attatch anyway lol

You used a polymer clay cane to make this beautiful bird ornament?
That goes beyond grasping for me.
At first sight I thought it was a glass ornament.

Love this design!   Smiley  I would also like more details about how this was made, it is so crisp and clean.

thank you Smiley i didnt take WIP pics for this particular cane but i did take some for an earlier one which i hope will be helpfull.
i generally start with a rough pencil line drawing which i transfer to tracing paper.
 the rows of dots you can see are where i place the paper on a stack of clay and punch through with a pin to give me a guide line of where to cut.











i then pack the image with translucent clay to make it a regular shape which makes it easier to reduce (there is a good artical here on how to pack and reduce a cane: http://polymerclaycentral.com/cane_wrap.html  )
 the penguin cane suffered some distortion around the bottom as you can see



the magpie and the diamond canes were made using the same method. i simply cut away the translucent clay after reducing then baked and sanded the cane slices.

I have done some cane work, but didn't totally understand your descriptions, either. Mine have always been "in the round" for bead work. But this is a very interesting project, all the same.  Grin I am guessing that you perhaps packed all your clay colors together, and then sliced smaller sections off from it? Sideways?

I don't think the bottoms look too distorted. I think it adds to their bellies, and rounds them out! The clay crafters on here are sparking my interests again. There are many projects shared here that are wonderful, and this is but yet another one! Great job. You look like you really know this craft. I just play pretend with mine  Grin I come up with interesting stuff, but not always what I was hoping for.
