How do you determine how wide to make your borders?

A lot of times I'm adding a border to get the finished quilt to the size I want it to be. Otherwise I would probably audition some fabric and see what width looks best. If you're using a traditional layout I think a border that is around 1/3 as wide as the blocks usually looks pretty good. So, if my quilt was made out of 12 inch blocks I might try a 4 inch border.

Although lots of modern quilts don't have borders at all, and that's what I've been leanings towards. Do you have a pic of your quilt? We might be able to give some suggestions. A double or even triple  border with contrasting fabrics might be fun! A popular pattern from Quilts for Kids uses a small border of 1 1/2 inch wide and then another border of 3 1/2 inch wide. It frames it nicely! (Baby/child size quilt)
