These are a project I have been working on since I found a good bunch of diaries in my local pound store. I wet felt using various blends around vintage doilies, which makes the doilies puff up and around, because (as those of you who wet felt will know) as the felt shrinks, the doilies struggle for room to exist and create these weird puffed up shapes - reminds me somewhat of the corals I used to see when I dived.
I then use a free and liberated (no presser foot) sewing machine to stick a free form shape all over the felt., I embellish it with beads, buttons or left overs from swaps Wink (the green leaf). THen I use old jeans to create an inner flap and pocket.
Voila - my I present a rather pic heavy collection.

Wow. Very interesting projects. What you refer to I believe is also called a "walking foot" You drop the gripper feet, and just spin the fabric as the needle catches it and the fabric in the foot. With a fancy foot on the machine that does not really officially grip the fabric, but can accomodate thicker layers, and will still pull it through. Watch your fingers! You did a really neat pattern on some of those. It takes a bit to get the hang of it, but then...easy as pie! Very interesting use of the buttons, as I am guessing were the closures? And just some for decoration?

Here is one tutorial I found: there are many more  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=10DBLRNFOMc

These are very novel. You are so smart, using the shrinking to your advantage. Makes me want to try doing it with some other materials as well. I'm glad C-ster has helped you gain confidence. It really is a great community.

Oh my goodness, I am drooling over these. I have been wanting to incorporate some felting into my art journaling -- this is brilliant!

LOVELOVELOVE the idea! And the journals-they're so beautiful!

I just got a few old yellow doilies from my friend and didn't know what to do them with and never thought of felting them.
Thank You for the inspiration!
