Spacestitch, that bag is top notch and I love the story behind it. Especially the sweet gift your mother in law gave you.

I  love this idea, but either I'm being stupid or I just cant get the "Envelope" part. I am so confused, can anyone help with this? Sad

I love it! I think I will try to make one myself! Stupid question..I can't really tell the size but is it small enough to carry on to an airplane? (If you check pretty things they ruin them..I know this, I've seen it happen)

hikeaddict:  I increased the width by 2 inches on mine, and my final bag is about 19" wide by 11" tall by 8" deep.  You'd have to check with your airline to see what size bag they will allow (and they may charge you for it anyhow from what I'm hearing lately!).  It is larger than I originally thought it would be and amply handles a weekend.  It's a terrific bag (I'm working on a second for a friend right now since I like mine so much).

tshirt:  I've struggled with the envelope bit each time.  Take a deep breath and try again.  Here's how I do it:  I lay the side piece right side up, as Logsio says.  Then I lay the top bit across and measure so that the ends are evenly distanced.  I start pinning at that point.  When you get to the corner, the extra fabric has to go *somewhere*, so you fold it in like an envelope to get rid of the excess and have neat sides to pin down.  Good Luck!
