I'm kinda pumping out a lot of necklaces lately, usually I buy a spool at Michael's, 12yds at 9.99, with a 50% off coupon, so 5 bucks.  But 12 yards isn't very much, i like longer necklaces.

Aside from ribbon, does anyone have any ideas as an alternative to necklace chain?

Depending on how it looks, you could use leather thong cord, or silk cordage, or a small bit of chain.   Maybe bead on bead line first and put the bigger components over that?  Some people like natural stuff like that hemp.

leather, leather cord, ribbon, hemp, colourful threads like embroidery floss, nylon fishing line for that transparent look, or strung with beads, tiger tail wire, woven thinner gauge wire, cut fabric, wool strands - pretty much anything you can make into  long strands with, weave, twist, or braid together, depending on the look you want.  Even lengths of paper if you want to maybe add a finish to increase it's wearability.
