I made these toys because I have a cat who is totally insane. He eats feathers, eyes, feet, tails, tags off of every toy we've gotten him. So what these are basically, is a shape (in this case, a fish) sewn together and filled with stuffing and a smattering of catnip. I also did a mouse one, but that was a little more trial and error.

Heres how to do it!

Fold a piece of 5x16 fabric right sides together and draw your pattern on it. I free handed this fish because I couldn't seem to find what I needed online, for free but there is a lot out there.

Cut out your fish pieces leaving about a inch around the whole thing for your seam allowance.

Sew along the lines you drew, making sure to leave the tail part open.

Now, turn in inside out and add stuffing and catnip! It should be looking like a cat toy now.

To close up the toy I folded the end of the tail inside itself and machine sewed a straight line from the top of the tail to the bottom. Though, there really isnt a top and a bottom.

My boyfriend got a great shot of the cat going bananas.

I think I'm going to try a person next, like a gingerbread man or something.
I hope someone finds this useful. This is a great beginner project!

Another option...a small space left and velcro shut...so you can add more catnip  Grin Neat project. I continue to add to my kitties playpen, too. I use the projects to test my stitching tension. They don't care what it looks like, and if they farm it off...oh well.  Grin

Very neat idea, and I agree. A great beginner project. Or one for the kids to learn on, too.

Thanks for sharing the tutorial!  These would also double nicely as baby toys, sans catnip, haha. Cheesy

Ooh this is fab.  One of my cats plays all the time and the other just can't be bothered but DOES eat everything in sight! He also loves catnip so I might try this Smiley
