(Copy/Printer Paper, #2 Pencil)
Thinking of using this to make a card for a friend, but... Is it recognizable?

Ummm. Sherlock? I don't have TV or Cable, so am very out of the loop. Sorry. But I would guess someone from English {UK} decent. I think it is a nice sketch, and would make a great card.

Suggestion? A bit of colored pencil...just a bit on the bill of the cap. and a bit of colored shading to match on the collar. Blue, green, mauve...something like that. Just a hint of it, though. The sketch part would look best shining through. Just a touch of pencil color. One stroke here, two there...that type thing.

Very nice face. I appreciate artists who can sketch the human form. I like the eye. He is peering at me!!! Spooky!

stillatthetop- Ooh! I like that idea. Maybe I can pull a color from a scrapbook paper to use in the background on the card for the accent in the sketch to tie it together. Thanks!

(Yes... Sherlock as played by Benedict Cumberbatch is what I was going for.)

Yeaaaah. I got it right. {booty dance!} Where is my Jeopardy prize!
Glad you liked my suggestion. And hope you put together a great card for your friend.
I make hand-made cards, too. But I can't sketch like you. Most of mine are collage.
You really did a wonderful job with your sketch. The eyes are the window to the soul, and that one is staring into the backside of my head! He looks well balanced, and I like that you left some of the outside edges to imagination. As in, no hard corners for most of it. Sort of a fade. Very neat trick. You are obviously a wonderful artist. And to get paid to come up with this at work???  Roll Eyes

You definitely win the jeopardy prize!

I don't make cards all that often. (I also don't draw as often as I used to since sewing is my primary craft now...) My mom always makes home made cards. They're such a nice thing to receive!

Ha! I feel like the boss isn't going to complain if I draw/sketch while waiting for the embroidery machines to finish up their run... at least not when I never take my breaks (I can't sit still that long at work, it seems like a waste of time).

They do all have beady eyes! I wonder if those are contacts? You know, to artistically {and photography} wise enhance the color, and glow?

I never really followed this series as a kid. But it is interesting. And I have always wanted to go experience the London fog. *Sigh* One day.

Is it recognizable, are you kidding? That's fantastic! It's recognizable in thumbnail form, and beautiful full-sized.

Here's the finished card... It ended up not the traditional card size, rather a 8x11-ish deal which I pasted the letter on the back of. But I couldn't resist the scrapbook paper (the gold damask layered over a teal, which reminded me of the wallpaper in 221B). Good news is that the recipient loved it!

(Taking photos of rectangular objects from above is not easy... It was more square/less wonky in real life)

I also went with stillatthetop's suggestion of adding in a little color. It's hard to see in this lighting, but there's a hint of navy colored pencil to match the blue paper it's mounted on.

Oh my gosh, this is AMAZING!  Can't believe I didn't see it months ago.  I can definitely believe your friend loved it and I would agree - it was instantly recognizable in tiny form much less full size!  Beautiful work!!
