I like Kit-Kat, unless I'm with 4 or more people.

I think I post my entry here, right? Move if necessary!

When I saw the deer pattern for the challenge, I knew I had to give him an ugly sweater. There was a vintage Christmas napkin and some glittery suede-like fabric in brown, white, and green in the fabric bin and I had everything else, which made this a stash busting hoop. He looked a little unfinished so I kept going and gave him some tinsel, ornaments, and bells for his antlers. Then I thought he needed a caption (thanks for that great baker's twine rackycoo!) so DH suggested "Dashing for the does", which was better than my "Bob wondered why his love life had always been stagnant".  And finally, because it was already a gaudy hoop, I added vintage ric-rac and an old bow. Why not?

As soon as I saw the pattern, I wanted to make him albino. I tried to manipulate the banner in the original pattern so I could add words, but my lack of Photoshop and patience caused me to abandon that thought quickly. Up until 3 days ago, I was all set on including a Russian idiom in Cyrillic; "Your elbow is near, yet you cannot lick it." nearly won out. However, some late night Googling caused me to change paths, and I present to you "The Deer's Cry":

the deer's cry by mnethia, on Flickr

The name for my piece comes from the Lorica of Saint Patrick (]http://www.irishcultureandcustoms.com/Poetry/StPatrick.html), also known as The Deer's Cry. The words at the top, chun cinn m inniu, is Irish (according to Google translate) of the refrain "I arise today".

I used varying shades of ecru to suggest the coloring and hairline. Once I was happy with that, I filled in the gaps with white. I swapped out the pine branches for laurel. Laurel is considered a symbol of triumph over temptation or trials in early Christian works, while a stag is a symbol of piety, or Jesus himself, depending on where you read.

Like I said, this went in a completely different direction that gags in Russian. I'm pretty happy with how this turned out! Eventually I'm going to hoop it and prepare it to hang, but I wanted to get the pictures up Smiley
