I hate throwing out good wool sweaters that are outdated or have tiny holes...I have been keeping them for years....well, I finally made a few things with them...

a hat and super warm mittens!  I used parts of two different sweaters.

This one I used three different sweater parts...I have the mittens somewhere...I hope I didn't lose them already!

I also made a pair of slippers but I have another pair in the works so I will take pics of them later.

Super smart! Are you working from a pattern when you cut the sweaters? Smiley

Basically working with geometry... Grin.

Measure around your head...add half inch if you can cut the piece as one, add one inch if you have to cut two pieces...cut a circle with the circumference equal to the first measurement (so if your head is 23 inches, you need a circle that is 23 inches round...to do that, find the diameter 23=pi d, roughly 8 inches or the size of a dinner plate...) You don't have to be super exact because the sweater fabric stretches and molds easily into shape!

I sort of have to wing it because of the sizes I have of sweaters...like a puzzle...Grin.  I made some a few years ago and just sort of stuck to the same pattern that seemed to fit my head snuggly.

The mittens were super easy.  I did use a basic pattern I found online that had a more flexible thumb than just drawing around your hand.

Thank you for all that. I have a few old sweaters I cannot bear to part with, and this is such a great idea. Smiley

The red sweater was one that I have had since I was a teenager...it was my favorite apres ski sweater...the yellow one was my first purchase from the GAP when I was working at Burger King...the blue was a thrift store find for $1.00!

I have a sweater from when I was 19ish. Cannot let it go, but can't wear it. The sleeves have shrank over the years and looks like I have gorilla arms if I wear it.  Cheesy

I love the hat and mittens! I think the red ones are my favorites.  And I bet the slippers are super cozy!
