I made this tall fish home for my son's betta fish, Kevin. I wanted to use up a bunch of my mixed beads bucket, so two sides are rainbow. On the front I put a Mario mushroom....because who doesn't like Mario? I made lots of openings for Kevin to swim in and out, and on the top I put a small perch for him to rest on. My son is very excited about Kevin's new house, and Kevin seems to enjoy it too Smiley

Here are the components before I assembled them. I hot glued the walls together.

All put together!

And of course an action shot:

Update: Here's a picture of the house in Kevin's new home, a divided 6 gallon that he shares with our other fish, Severus Snape. He's super happy in his new home!

What a smart idea!  I love perler beads, but it gets a little repetitive making magnets and coasters out of them.  I am definitely pinning this away for future reference.  Wink

Great idea. Kevin looks like he loves his new pixilated tower. I remember my fish tanks when I was little and I was always so disappointed when the fish didn't seem to care about some kickass (what I thought anyways) tank accessory. What kind of glue did you use?

Thanks everyone!

@lady4feet, I used hot glue...which is aquarium safe. The only other fish safe sealant I know about is aquarium silicone sealant.

It is really cute, but it is going to get nasty pretty quickly and its going to be hard if not impossible to clean. All of the little holes in the perler beads and the gaps between them are going to fill up with algae and bacteria. Also I would worry about his fins snagging or getting scratched on any rough edges.

Trust me, I thoroughly checked for any places his fins could get snagged or lodged. It's very smooth and passed the panty hose test. I also clean his ornaments every week in warm water when I do his water change, so no worries Smiley

My first thought was OMG she used hot glue in an aquarium surely that will poison the fishies! But after reading your post and seeing that it is safe I a) apologise for doubting you and b) need to say how freaking awesome it is!

I had that same idea when I saw it. It will be a pain in the butt to keep bleached and cleaned. Didn't think about the rough edges, though, but you are right. Good point. It is cute, but maybe better if sealed in some form of acrylic, so that it was more like a plexiglass feature. With solid walls between the openings.

I find it funny that people are so worried about the effect that this is going to have on my tank. It's not my first fish rodeo, guys. In response to the above concerns...bleach should never, ever be used on anything that is going to be put in a fish tank. Soap isn't even tank safe. Also, algae growth is easily controlled with proper lighting, tank water parameters, and weekly partial water changes/gravel vacuuming, all of which are implemented in my tank. As far as the bacterial concern, you actually want the beneficial bacteria to grow in your tank, because it's a sign of a healthy system. The bacteria colonizes and starts the nitrogen cycle which converts ammonia to less toxic nitrates. So, no worries there. And lastly, have you seen the decor they sell in stores? The pretty fake reefs and and caves? Run your fingers across those bad boys next time you visit a pet store. Ouch.

So no worries. Kevin is completely safe and happy in his perler bead condo. All aspects of this project were researched before I made it.
