Currently knitting a jumper. I have 48 stitches cast on and am knitting in rib, k4 p4 each row.
I don't understand the increase. Do I knit or purl?!

The increase will be knit or purl depending on where you are in the pattern on the row, or you can do either and it won't matter, because it's how you work the new stitch on the next row. You have to stay in pattern and work the sts so you keep to the ribbing. You can just knit the first and last stitches and keep them that way rather than in pattern; they'll be hidden in the seam so they won't be noticeable.

So the first row, you can kfb, k1, p2, k2 etc to the end of the row and end with k2, pfb, p1. Then the WS row would be p3, k2, p2, and will end with p2, k2, p3. And so on.
