Materials Required:

  • ¼ yard Fabric material (Floral design) from the pillow case
  • ¼ yard lining material (White)
  • Needle
  • Button craft Thread (75 yard – lavender color)
  • Green Buttons
  • Scissors
  • Scale
  • Pencil

The toddler hat is made from a used pillowcase. First I have drawn three patterns to design the hat like circle, rectangle and square in both the materials I used. Cut out the patterns from the pillowcase material.

Catch Stitch:

The catch stitch is nearly an invisible stitch and is used more for hand sewing (e.g. hemming). Usually the catch stitches has overlapping diagonal stitches over the top side and on the reverse side it has very small invisible stiches. Always begin the catch stitch from the left side.

Start the stitches from the underside edge by folding the floral fabric material with the white lining material. Take the first diagonal stitch across the folded edge and take a small amount of thread and pull the thread through. Then again come across and take a small amount of the folded edge and pull back through and knot off the thread from the folded edge. So tie a knot, pull the thread and keep your thumb and pull it tight to make it strong.

After stitching all the patterned pieces we need to connect the pieces into a hat. Pin the top edge of the hat (circle pattern) to the other brim pieces to get a right view.

Use the same catch stitch method to connect them. Pin and stitch brim pieces of main fabric together at sides. Press seams open. Then turn your hat right side and let your little one enjoy wearing their new hat.

Tada … A perfect hat for Toddlers!!!

I never realized one could construct a hat, but after seeing your tutorial it now makes such sense.

Really cute and great idea to use a similar size stuffed animal when a kiddo isn't around  Wink

Very cute. It's a great hat to keep the sun off of a little one's head.
