Hopefully this is the right board to be asking this question, but here goes: I have fabric that my Mom sent (I got 3 boxes of random fabric! Cheesy) BUT one of the fabrics is a dusty rose that I would love to dye a dark violet and make a skirt out of. However, I have no idea of the fibre content. Is there any trick to finding out if the fabric will hold the dye? Without wasting all of my dye?

You could try a burn test to figure out the fabric type, because different fabrics like different dyes.

Yup a burn test will give some good clues about the fiber content, to help you choose the right kind of dye. Or you could ask your mom

If neither one can give you a definitive answer, then the only option is to experiment.
