I love, love, love crafting. It is my passion, but I recently encountered some terrible snobbery from someone who claimed to be 'a real artist' targeting hobby crafters. I belong to a group that both artist and crafty types usually play very nicely and are absolutely supportive of one another but... One day an 'artist' came along and started spouting off about how terrible some of the 'suzy scrapbooker' work was. I was appalled. FLABBERGHASTED! How fecking rude!?!? Humph!

ANYWAY I wanted to create some pieces that combined absolutely crafty things (embellishments and scrapbook papers) AND 'fine art' skills to show that the two can most certainly get along Wink So, here are my mixed media canvas'. They each measure 12 x 16 and are mostly paper collage with some painted elements added.

And some detail shots of the painted bits in-progress.

I agree with you. The line between crafty and artist is a very blurry line. Many times I have seen crafts that are definitely in the art category. (And vice versa as well!). You have easily stepped into the fine arts arena with your collages. Beautiful.

Art is in the eye of the beholder....even if it gets a little blackened in the process.  Grin

Beautiful works of art!

For me there is no real border between art and crafts.
Especially since both of them are done by many different people, on many different levels.
I love artists/crafters for being creative. Creativity is positivity.
You cannot be negative or hatefull while creating something beautiful.
So for me art and crafts are equally important.
Creativity has many faces and many levels of skill, talent, work involved, etc.
What they all have in common is passion. Again: positivity.
Both art and crafts make the world prettier, step by step.

These are beautiful! I love all the layer-y goodness. It's hard to pick a favorite, but I do love that little boy at the end. Do you use actual cabinet cards, or do you copy them and use the copies?

I think I'd die using the originals! I scan and copy them. Some of them are pretty beat up so I digitally repair some that are really dinged up first.

These are beautiful, Knickers! They are inspiring me to put to use the layering skills we learned at art camp! I love all of them, but I think my favorite is the center one...she has such a lovely feeling about her.
