I made this box for the CHA shin-dig a while ago using the Steampunk Spells line from Graphic 45

The base is just one of those tiny wooden hinged boxes from the dollarstore.

Those amazing feet were kindly donated to me by craftylittlemonkey  Kiss I love that girl xoxo

See those sort of curly bits? They're curved brad prongs.

The other metal bits are from G45, their staples line. I'm on the design team but in all honesty... holy crap, their stuff is soooo nice and hefty.

The Swinging Hook & Latch Set is from Alpha Stamps and is so much nicer than the original hardware.

The whole piece was pretty small, if I remember correctly it was probably only about 5" tall, but it weighs a ton with all those metal bobs on it.

I have no idea how you multi media crafters pull it all together to make it awesome, but you do! Very cool.

This is exactly what I was thinking! I don't do this type of crafting, but I really love & admire it. How do you begin? Do you have a vision of the final piece before you start, or is it something that develops as you go?

I usually start with a VERY vague idea and think about it for a few days. I don't usually sketch for specific pieces but I kind of work it out in my head while I'm doing the laundry and other boring things for two or three days. Then I just set to work and fiddle amd move things here and there and keep working until it's done. Most often what I end up with is quite different than my original idea. I think that helps a lot because I don't force things that don't work, and focus on good design. Having a good stash helps a lot... I never buy supplies for specific pieces (unless it's a house).
