I am in the midst of the disaster zone.  It's been a week.  We had no idea the extent of the devastation in the beginning.  As the flash flood warnings and evacuations came one after the other, I still had power so I began to sew.

I had a baby quilt to make for Ivy (a friend's newborn).  So I used scraps to peice together her name.

News came in from the next town over - homes were being washed away.  I made some new houses.

I got an email from a college friend that he had a sister stranded on top of Longs Peak.  How do you tell a dear friend that even the helicopters can't fly.  There are 1000s in trouble.  The roads are all washed out.  No mountain access.

My Mom sent a photo of her backyard.  The bridge has collapsed.  How many roads are out?  We are separated by a huge dangerous river.  She is safe.

Must keep sewing.  I made some 'crumb' blocks to add to Ivy's quilt.

Train tracks washed out.  More bridges.  More towns.  I am so tired of watching for evacuations.  More rain.  Walls of water.  More devastation.

I can't have a meltdown.  I have to be ready for when we can get out and help.  More sewing.  Bright happy colors.

The rain stops.  The family is all safe.  Friends are checking friends.  All are accounted for but major need.  We load up the rubber boots, rubber gloves, food and great spirits BECAUSE I'VE BEEN SEWING!

We work tirelessly, endlessly, holding our friends while we empty basements, clean precious photos, rip up carpets.  Strangers show up.  From Puerto Rico, Utah, Canada, Las Vegas, Roswell, North Carolina.  They have strong backs, food, happy smiles  Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy  We were so grateful for the help.

I was exhausted from hauling.  But that night, I pulled out all my peices and started putting them together.

Next day, more hauling.  More saving family photos.  I am so grateful to be able to help my friends.

This is going to be a long process.  I must maintain my own sanity in order to keep showing up.  Last night, I put the quilt top together for Ivy and it's done.  I think it may be the most beautiful thing I have ever made.

I have enough blocks/pieces to make another full size quilt or two!  I will keep sewing as we continue to clean up our beautiful state of Colorado.  I am so grateful that I have crafting.  To me, it's like calming meditation.

It is one of the most beautiful things...juxtaposed with the devastation of your are, it is even more beautiful...I am glad that crafting kept your spirits up...you nourished your soul so you could help others...

Thanks for your lovely photo journal of both the ugly and the beauty in this world...

I love your quilt and the process...that child will have some story to tell someday...you should print out your post for her...

So encouraging and beautiful.
I think this story is about how to handle fear, what it means to be brave and how we love and comfort each other. You should tell Ivy this story often when you tuck her in to bed.
I think you may have the makings of a wonderful children's book here!

AlwaysInMyRoom - thank you for your kind words  Smiley

Cackle - my beautiful little inchie village is set up next to our large 'viewing' window.  After I don't know how many days of torrential rain, I looked at YooPiDou's treehouse and said to the hubby, "Let's build one of those!"  Hah!  My home is filled with beautiful treasure's from fellow Craftsters.  I have a flamingo pillow from EdelC. that I find myself just holding.  I even find my husband holding it.  It's got these white pompoms that for some reason just make me happy.

Your story and strength brought tears to my eyes. Each stitch in this special quilt will hold so much emotion and love for years to come. I think it will give Ivy magical powers Smiley.

My thoughts are with you, your family, your friends and all those that have been impacted by the flooding. Stay strong and craft on!

I knew it was your post just from the thumbnail, and now I am wiping away the tears.
I finally heard from my former teaching partner who lives in Boulder that she and her partner are A-OK. She teaches at the university so they had a few hours of water clean-up.

The quilt and the story are just beautiful -it will be a treasure for Ivy.
Thanks so much for sharing the story and your thoughts about the flood.

The quilt is gorgeous, I love all the colors. I love projects with such brite colors but when I put them together for a project I am convinced they don't go.

Your post is beautiful too. Crafting is a wonderful therapy/distraction for so many of us and you show this so much.

What a beautiful story. I love how crafting filled your soul and gave you more to give. I also love how family, friends and strangers came together. We saw this in Connecticut after the October storm and Hurricane Sandy. Our love to all of you. And what a wonderful quilt, so much love.

A beautiful quilt and had hard story to read from so far away.  The amount of work it is going to take to regain the tiniest bit of normalcy is unbelievable.  I hope you are able to continue to stitch and create while you deal with this.  When it becomes clear what is needed I hope you are able to share that with us as well.

What a moving story! I'm so relieved to know you're fine and your friends and family too. It's good that strangers came to help and that you could help too. Take care of yourself and don't forget to rest though.

Since crafting seems to help you weathered the storm, you will likely craft a lot in the next weeks. Why not an i-treehouse to put your beautiful next quilts in?

What a wonderful quilt! It has great design. I love the little houses and the trees. I like how it explodes with colors. It is a very bright and cheery quilt. Ivy is very lucky.

Thank you all for your kind words.  I'll keep updating the first post until I stop sewing Smiley  HAH!  I think this is going to be a looooong haul.  You all may see several/many quilts made in the process.

I love the story behind this. It brought tears to my eyes. You are a true hero, in that, in the midst of all that devastation, you were still thinking of others. You were creating beauty, when all around you, you saw destruction. That quilt is gorgeous, and bright, and will forever be a treasure.

I got a book a book by Tonya Ricucci called Word Play Quilts.  It's based on that Liberated Quilting Technique that a woman called Gwen Marston pioneered (maybe?).  Tonya is on pinterest and has tons of pins for great ideas.  Her blog doesn't seem to be working anymore.  But once I learned the technique, it's easy!  And quite fun Smiley

What cute quilts.  I especially love the pieced together houses.  Where did you find that great fabric with the awesome girlie skulls?
I'm glad to hear people are alright even if their homes were underwater, I was really lucky that my neighborhood didn't flood while the others all around us did.

Surprise Surprise on the girlie skulls.  W@lm@rt.  Fabric is so expenseive these days (along with everything else) that I've actually gone to the dark side  Embarrassed
I'm glad to hear that you didn't flood as well.  It's hard to see, isn't it?  Both hubby & I are feeling survivor guilt and just can't do enough to help the others who lost so much.  I no longer judge my feelings.  It is what it is  Roll Eyes
