I am not very skilled when it comes to the sewing machine.  I have a book that I really intend on reading and using to hone these skills a bit more but I just never seem to have the time.  When I saw that my partner in the FOC Secret Swap wanted a bag and then I happened upon a fantastic (meaning simple) tutorial for a tote bag I figured I would give it a try.

I ordered some fabulous fabric and got to work cutting it out.  Ummm yeah I stink at cutting fabric.  I need to learn some tips and maybe get something longer than 13 inches to use to measure.  Luckily even though my cutting needs some work the tote itself actually turned out okay after it was all sewn up.

It's fully lined but unfortunately has no pockets Sad  It also has those neat "boxy" corners that look all fancy but are REALLY easy to do.

So here it is, the first tote bag I have ever made!

Not too bad for a first timer!  The tutorial can be found at make it & love it

I'm not much of a sewer, but you bag looks lovely to me.  From what I can see on this board half the battle in making something nice is choice of fabrics, and I think you did a splendid job!

Thanks guys!  I bought some awesome hot pink and black fabrics to make another and I have lots of those two particular fabrics left over.  I am thinking of changing the pattern a bit to make a smaller tote next time.

Sounds lovely!  The great thing about sewing is that you can do your own thing!  Can't wait to see it...keep up the good work!

Great bag!  You've certainly got the knack.  Now you've also got the bug.  It's fatal, my dear.  It starts very innocently with the odd tutorial and quickly escalates into full blown lust for fabric and patterns.  It will drive you crazy.  Sometimes you'll pursue bags down the street or on buses to memorize the pattern.  Women will eye you warily as you leer greedily at their bags and not the contents. You'll have endless bits of paper with strange diagrams and dimensions.  It will demand embroidery machines and sergers, tables and even a room.  It will hijack your bank account.  When all is said and done, there is no sweeter feeling than looking at this wondrous thing you've somehow produced (flaws and all).  So, go ahead.  Bite the apple, drink deeply from the cup, sell your soul and sew your fingers off.  It's already too late.
