i work at a craft store, and we recently acquired some origami paper for store use. in the bag of papers, there were a few instruction sheets, including one of jungle animals, in japanese. since there was a pattern for a giraffe, i had to make one. i made the neck and legs out of two pieces as per the instructions, but i didn't see any sort of tab/slot method of connecting the two. so i ended up taping the two pieces together. so, did i mess up folding the legs, and there was supposed to be a slot (because only a barbarian glues origami), or was i supposed to glue it?

crafting is something i do when life doesn't present me enough ways to dye my hands funny colors.

Personally, I believe you are "supposed" to do whatever works best for you.  I thought this was an interesting website...http://www.britishorigami.info/academic/lister/glue.php
