Breaking loved ones' sewing machines since 2013

Back in July, I started a series of lino block prints featuring signs from around my hometown of San Antonio, TX (http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=425489.0#axzz2eSOXKwW2).  This weekend, I finished up the next item in the series:

This angel is not technically a sign, but rather, part of the logo from the La Gloria restaurant at the Pearl (the complex that inspired the first two items in the series).  I am not sure who the artist of the original image is, but I wanted to make sure and point out that I did not do this design; I only replicated it as a lino block print.  Still, this was my most ambitious carving project to date, and I am *really* pleased with how it came out.

That first print was done on white canvas paper, using the back of a spoon to burnish the paper and get a full image.  I also did one on brown Kraft paper:

I have to say, I love the way these prints look on the kraft paper.  Since I initially posted this for the Summer Nerd Games, I also did prints with green ink to better reflect my team and the challenge I submitted it for:

That last image is actually the very first pressing I did with the block.  Unlike the others, which were burnished with the back of a spoon, I merely pressed the block down onto the paper for this one; you'll notice that it gives a much less full image.

Lastly, the carved block itself:

The carved blocks themselves feel like small works of art to me.  I love how what is negative space in the print is actually full of carved lines -- it makes the blocks feel almost alive somehow.

I am really pleased with how the series is going so far, and I definitely plan to continue -- I would love to have 12 or 15 images total by the time I'm done.

How wonderful! This is such a great piece. You must be printing it every chance you get Smiley.

I did some lino carving in an art class years ago. I really enjoyed the process.

He is fantastic! I love seeing finished linocuts, and you're right, they are like little works of art themselves ^____^

That looks great! I love what you said about the negative space. Such a strange image, i can see why you wanted it to be part of your series. Smiley
