I've decided to try my hand at a quilt and I want to put together the two things I love; applique and rag quilts. I have done a bit of searching and haven't found any applique rag quilts but figured I'd just wing it and see what happens. I have it (vaguely) planned out and I'm on to my third block and I suddenly realized that perhaps there's a reason I've never actually seen one. So, quilty people, is there any reason not to mesh these two things together? I know it won't be so pretty on the reverse side, but is there any other reason that it doesn't really seem to be done?

I am a complete quilting virgin so any input would be gratefully received! Smiley Or if my google-fu is broken and anyone has found an elusive rag-applique hybrid, please leave a link!

Do a google search for  rag quilt with applique  and you will find a number of sites with instructions and many pictures of quilts others have made in this fashion.  Good luck with yours!

I think you could definitely do some applique in the squares of a rag quilt. Here's the google image search of what was suggested above:

https://www.google.com/search?q=rag+quilt+with+applique&client=firefox-a&hs=lWi&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=Dw0eUvnHD-egiQKUg4GABA&ved=0CD4QsAQ&biw=1252&bih=585

What kind of applique are you thinking of? Either raw edge or turned edge seems like it would be good, raw edge would continue the theme of ragged edges while turned edges would provide a nice smooth counterpoint to the raggedness.

Umm, oops! lol.  Cheesy Thanks guys, I think I was over-complicating my search strings when googling 'cause those beauties were hiding from me.

MareMare, I was doing raw edge but encasing it in satin stitch, but thank you for that note - I hadn't thought of it that way. I've been a bit overwhelmed with this project as the mere thought of quilting has always been a scary one to me.  Wink
