I've taken a commission from a friend to turn a military style heavy leather vest into this:

We're both semi-active members in the SCA.

I plan to take out the lining currently in the vest (a kind of scratchy wool material) to make punching the holes and sewing the coins on easier. My question is, is there a recommended material for the lining that would help keep him cool while wearing it? He won't be using it for any actual fighting - it's just a period costume. Also, I imagine that the leather will make it difficult, if not impossible, for him to wash. Is making the lining removable via zipper recommended?

Thank you for any advice!
