Welcome to the Fall Nerd Battles Arena!
I, pinkleo, shall be your host and Head Gamemaker.

The Fall Nerd Battles welcomes all players from the Nerdyverse to join!  The games are to inspire, encourage, and motivate your crafting adventure.  Players can join anytime during the games.

Are you wondering if you are part of the Nerdyverse?   I think John Green describes quite well...
“…nerds like us are allowed to be unironically enthusiastic about stuff… Nerds are allowed to love stuff, like jump-up-and-down-in-the-chair-can’t-control-yourself love it. ...when people call people nerds, mostly what they’re saying is ‘you like stuff.’ Which is just not a good insult at all. Like, ‘you are too enthusiastic about the miracle of human consciousness’.”  ...I think we are all part of the Nerdyverse. Cool

Rules of Engagement
--There is a list of challenges, for you to complete.
--You complete a challenge with crafty item you think fulfills it; you can use your description to make it clear on how craft fits challenge prompt.
--Players must craft to the best of their abilities and have a minimum of 30 minutes of crafting time per submission.
--A project can only be submitted for one challenge (the same project cannot be entered in multiple categories).
--A project does NOT have to be "nerdy" to fit a challenge; it only has to fulfill the prompt as you see it.
--Challenges must be started & completed during the Fall Nerd Battles, unless otherwise noted.
--There will be SO MUCH to do in the Fall Nerd Battles.  Do not feel like you have to craft everything.  Do what inspires you.
--We welcome all players from the Nerdyverse, no matter their Geekdom.
--We are never mean.
--We never exclude someone.
--We will keep it cleanish (PG-PG13).
--We will follow all Craftster guidelines, this includes staying on-topic (serious OT goes in FOC OT boards).
--You will be asked to join a team.
--Never hesitate in contacting Head Gamemaker pinkleo with your questions, concerns, or ideas.

About Teams
--Teams are where like-minded players join to work together.
--There is no limit to the number of people in a team.
--Though you may feel at home in more than one team, pick the one that draws you the most.
--You may change teams each new season, but you cannot switch during a season.
--Portal to Team Descriptions--.

You are welcome to do any, all, or none of these challenges.  (Remember, they are just here to help get your crafty juices flowing!)

Battle Royale
Changes each month.  Choose your side and craft a project to represent one side.  Must be completed within the month of the battle.  Winner announced each month.

---CLOSED September Battle: Bard1 Battle: Shakespeare vs. Dickens vs. Austen---
Battle Standings: Shakespeare-, Dickens-, Austen-

---CLOSED October Battle: Werewolves vs. Vampires---

---November Battle: Heroes vs. Villains---

UFO Sightings
As a UFO Investigator, you are tasked with grabbing your gear anytime a UFO is spotted.  This may mean long nights, so better take along a project or two to entertain you while you wait.  Remember, your job is to take a picture of a completed UFO (aka Unfinished Finished Object) and report back to headquarters.  Good luck!  The truth is out there.

UFOs can be projects that you just haven't quite finished or projects that you bought all the supplies for but never got around to actually making.  If possible, post before and after pics in the thread.  All UFO projects may be turned in anytime during the Nerd Battles, regardless of what the newest Challenge is, up until the semester ends on November 30th.  (For example, you may turn in September or October challenges in November.)

---September Sighting: October 18, 1973, Captain Lawrence J. Coyne, Staff Sergeant John Healy, Co-Pilot Arrigo Jozzi, and Crew Chief SSGT Robery Yanacsek were flying from Columbus, Ohio to Cleveland, Ohio in a helicopter.  When the aircraft was near the Mansfield airport, Captain Coyne adjusted his flight path to avoid a collision with a "cigar-shaped, metallic gray" object that shone a "green spotlight."  Other witnesses on the ground reported similar sightings that evening, including the description of the unusual beam of bright green light.  10 extra bonus points for turning in a UFO that is "green".

---October Sighting: February 18, 1968, Vashon Island Incident: Three men reported seeing a shiny saucer shaped craft, which froze a pond over which it had hovered. 10 extra bonus points for turning in a UFO that is icy "blue".

---November Sighting: August 12, 1953, Ellsworth UFO sighting: A UFO appearing as a red glowing light is witnessed by 45 people. The sighting takes place for two nights.  10 extra bonus points for turning in a UFO that is "red".

Challenges
You may complete challenge any time during the games, but you may only submit each prompt one time.

--September--
---Periodic Table: Select ONE and only ONE element from the currently accepted Periodic Table of Elements and create a project that you can connect to the element via its properties (such as the structure, element number, common uses / location, atomic weight, atomic symbol, volume, etc).

---Starfleet Uniform: In Starfleet, officer jobs are traditionally denoted by the colors the officers wear.  Uniforms are red for command, gold for engineering, and blue for science & medical.  Craft something red, gold, and/or blue in color.

---Conventions: Craft something that can be found at a convention (could be a specific one or conventions in general) or craft something that would useful at a convention (like a bag to put all your free stuff in).

---Monster Madness: Make your monster creation come alive!  Craft your very own monster or a project inspired by your favorite monster.

---Palindrome: "Flee to me, remote elf."  A palindrome is a word or sentence that reads the same forward as it does backward.  Some simple examples are: racecar, level, or pop.  Study palindromes and craft something that is either the same forward as back or inspired by a palindrome.  --PORTAL to Palindrome List--

--October--
---Seeing from a Different Angle: An angle is formed by two rays or two line segments sharing a common endpoint.  The challenge is simple; create something with an angle in it.

---Twilight Zone: "There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call the Twilight Zone.” ~Rod Serling   Enter the Twilight Zone and either craft an item inspired by any Twilight Zone episode (inspiration show must be stated in turn-in) or create an item inspired by the above quote.

---Archetype: Traditionally archetype refers to the model upon which something is based, but it has also come to mean an example of a personality archetype, particularly a fictional character in a story based on a well-established personality model.  Although there are many different archetypes, Jung defined twelve primary types that symbolize basic human motivations. Each type has its own set of values, meanings and personality traits. These 12 Archetypes are: The Innocent, The Orphan/Regular Guy or Gal, The Hero, The Caregiver, The Explorer, The Rebel, The Lover, The Creator, The Jester, The Sage, The Magician, and The Ruler.  Your challenge is to indentify one of these archetypes in a piece of fiction and create something inspired by them.  When turning in your project, please list your character and archetype.

---Bottom's Up: Craft something inspired by your favorite drink.

---Let's Celebrate: Have you heard of Talk Like a Pirate Day (Sept. 19) or Thesaurus Day(Jan. 18) or Lost Sock Memorial Day(May 9)?  The Nerdyverse's Calendar is full of different ways to celebrate.  Your challenge is to honor one of these Secret, Nerdy Holidays through your crafting.  Of course you will not find these "odd" holidays on a regular calendar so you need to make sure we know what and when we can celebrate your chosen holiday.

--November--
--- Welcome our new overlords! Craft something representing your idea of our new overlords…robots, aliens, altered humans, new evolutionary skills or craft something to give your new overlords.

---The Scientific Method: Ask a Question, Form a Hypothesis, Conduct an Experiment, Collect Data, Analyze your Data & Draw a Conclusion… Come up with a question and hypothesis for your craft, work it up and discover the results!  Submissions that follow a lab report type of format (i.e. main steps clearly stated and represented) will earn 10 extra points.

---British Invasion: Home of Shakespeare, Joyce, Guinness drinkers, tea drinkers, and some Doctor guy…I forget his name. Use you crafting to represent how you are inspired or influenced by the British Invasion.

---Myths: A  myth is a traditional story, especially one concerning the early history of a people or explaining some natural or social phenomenon, and typically involving supernatural beings or events.  Your challenge is craft something that illustrates or is inspired by a myth.  A link or title of myth reference should be included with turn-in.

---Newbies & Noobs:  Contrary to the belief of many, a noob/n00b and a newbie/newb are not the same thing. Newbies are those who are new to some task; they are willing to learn and fix their errors to move out of that stage.  Noobs, on the other hand, know little and have no will to learn any more.  Everyone has been in the shoes of at least one of these.  Your challenge is to  research a newbie or noob.  Those researching newbies should attempt a new-to-you craft.  Those researching noobs should attempt a project that you have attempted before and gave up on.

1: Yes, I know; "bard" is a poet, traditionally one reciting epics.  But I couldn't resist the alliteration.

---Research Projects---

--Research Projects are more time-consuming than challenges and battles.  There is no hard and fast rule on how many hours a project should take, because speed and difficulty levels are too subjective.  What we are really looking for is a project that will be a personal challenge to you.
--Research Projects are projects that take 3 or more weeks to complete.
--Projects that do not take the allotted time of crafting will not be counted as complete; keep that in mind when you post your completed Research Projects.  If you finish your project earlier than expected, then craft an additional item(s) that correspond with your Research.  Add notes on how you finished earlier than expected and details about your additional crafting in your Completed Project post.
--Research Projects can be anything that takes up at least 3 weeks of crafting time.
--You will earn 100 points for each Research Project.
--You can earn Bonus Points for Research Projects.
--Research Projects must be proposed before starting so that Gamemakers can track timeline and encourage your successful completion.  In your proposal, you will give details on what your plan is and how it will take the allotted time to complete.
--If your Research Project is a surprise, such as swap project, you may submit your Research Plan to the Head Gamemaker via PM.
--You may propose a Research Project any time.  Any unfinished projects will carry over to the next season's Nerd Battles/Games
--You can only have one Research Project going at a time.
--If you decide to abandon a Research Project, notify the Gamemakers, and they will erase that log from their records.  Once you have submitted to have a Research Project erased, you can propose a new one.

---HOW TO COMPLETE A RESEARCH PROJECT ---
1. Select what project you would like to complete.  You may only do one Research Project at a time so select carefully.
2. Propose what you plan on doing for your Research Project.  You may do this by posting in this thread or by PM to your Head Gamemaker.  When making a Research Project Proposal, please use the header below, and make sure you give details such as methods using, materials using, plan of action, timeline.  These details will help us cheer you on and inspire future Research Projects.
3. Begin work on your project.  Feel free to add progress pics in the Nerd Battles/Games Discussion thread.
4. Once your project is complete, post a picture of your project in this thread; make sure to use the Research Project Header provided below.  Once you post a completed project, you will earn a Special Research Project Badge.

The Fall Nerd Battles are OPEN!

This is the home for Completed Projects, Research Project Declarations, & Completed Project ooos & ahhhs.

For discussions, chatting, & progress pics, head over to the Nerd Battles Discussion.  Posts will be moved to appropriate threads when necessary.  Thanks for your help in keeping the Nerd Battles in order! Kiss

There is SO MUCH to do in the games.  Do not feel like you have to craft everything.  Think of the Nerd Battles as a "Choose Your Own Adventure".  Craft what inspires you, but don't try to do everything and get burned out.  Keep in mind the wise words of jennieingram, "It does not do to dwell on lists and forget to craft."

Have fun!  And stay tuned as more challenges are arriving.

Now let's ROCK!

About Team Declarations

You declare your Team in your first completed project post, in your header. Grin

Team Captains: You may reserve yourself a spot in the battle arena.  I will add a PORTAL to the first page so your teammates can find you. Cool
