I said goodbye to my best friend of 7 years on Tuesday and I want to make something using his collar. I know 7 years doesn't seem that long but it felt like a lifetime. He was there through my marriage and divorce, he protected me while driving the Alaska Highway alone 7 months pregnant, he was with me when I started over on a remote island in Alaska .. he was my buddy through everything. I'm trying to think of something besides the standard shadow box ideas because I would like something I can take with me when I travel, hike, etc. Does anyone have any ideas?
Here he is at a year old -

Wildfyre, I'm so sorry about the loss of your good friend. It is never easy loosing a friend that close.
I think  it's wonderful that you want to use his collar someway. Maybe as a bracelet or a watch band. Earrings. (can't get the thought out of my head how I like to touch my long earrings and remember my Mom who gave them to me). If you read a lot, a bookmark of some sort with a piece of his collar.
Surely a beautiful dog (much more than that). I notice that in the picture he is looking not at the camera but as if at someone he loves...such soulful eyes. RIP

I'm so sorry you lost your friend. He sounds like he was a great companion for you. I recently lost my baby too. Like you we only had him for 7 years. It wasn't long enough at all but when I try to think about a time before he was in our life it's hard because it seems like he was always there.

My first thought was a bracelet like jinjeet mentioned. You said you'd like to be able to take it with you when you hike. Do you have a pack that you use or something you carry your water in? Maybe you could sew or attach it to that.
