I strongly believe that there can never be too many DIY/Craft sites out there promoting those of use who do this as a biz - and a few recent posts have got me to seriouslly think about taking action on something I've been mulling over for a while . . . I love all the DIY directories, the Sampler and Happily Handmade - but I really think there needs to be something Canadian out there!  So here's the question:

As a crafter/DIYer would you be interested in promoting your crafts through:
a) a FREE CDN directory?
b) a Sampler-type/Happily Handmande-type Canadian based project? (don't worry - not planning on copycatting!)

As a buyer of craft/DIY would you:
a) use a Canadian directory to shop?
b) be interested in receiving/winning Canadian crafts be it samples or gift basket-type giveaways?

I have read a few threads on starting up new directory sites & sampler-style projects - not trying to rip any ideas off, certainly won't be copycatting - but still think there is room for something similar and something Canadian!  Smiley

Please share your thoughts!

hi there. being a canadian crafty gurl myself, i would be interested in *any* of the above. i *just* discovered happily handmade TODAY, and the concept is quite interesting from what i've sussed so far. i'd love a way to find out about homegrown talent, and perhaps share some of my wares with others. there's certainly nothing wrong with international crafters, but supporting the locals is always more gratifying. so please keep me posted on whatever you decide to do! I would definetly be up for that. Especially since there aren't very many Canadian shopping sites...well ones that I could find anyways... I would love to see something like that started...

I would like to set up shop in the next month or so, so something like this would totally benefit me. Although I already plan on doing the sampler and happily handmade, I would love to have the option to do something Canadian as well. I order a ton of craft supplies off the internet...most of which comes from the states (cause they have better selection...and we have VERY limited on-line stores) I have no problem with this, and I will continue to buy from US stores, but I have to admit, that it costs a lot more to buy it from the US then in Canada because I have to pay duty...I hate paying duty. For an example...I ordered some threader earings cause I couldn't find then anywhere in Canada. I bought $25.00US worth and the duty was $9.95  CDN  ...by the time I converted the currency and paid the duty it was $40.00.

Anyways, I think its a good idea...and I also think that there is enough room for everyone to play...I just think we need to promote Canadian crafts more....and it would also benefit US websites too...it just means more exposure!

Anyhoo, thats just my two cents.

Thanks for the replies ladies - I will definitely keep you posted!  Trying to come up with a way to offer samples of CDN crafts without ripping off the above mentioned biz's . . . tougher than it seems! *lol*  Think it will be easier to start with the directory and see what's even out there!  Cheesy

Edited to add: Check out the LiveJournal Directory at http://www.livejournal.com/~cdncrafter

If you are or know any Canadian crafters please add your listing (see the "Welcome" post!)  If there is enough interest generated I would deifintely love to move beyond just a directory into a newsletter, contests, promo sharing and samples, etc!   Grin

I think these are all good ideas. I'll sumbit my site to the directory.
Although, please keep in mind that if you decide to do something like the sampler/happily handmade that it is actually very different and a completely unique idea. People have worked hard on these, and it would suck to rip them off!

its probably ok if she doesnt use the actual names that they have been using. or if she really really must, she might contact the site owners?

anyways, Ive seen ideas like the happily handmade and the sampler kicking around for years, I dont think that its an idea anyone can claim to have sole ownership to. people have been conducting give-aways to promote things for eons!

ps I hope this post doesnt sound crabby, cause its not meant to! im just sharing my thoughts  Grin
also, like i said in another thread, its great to see Cnd craftsters coming together! woot!

Hmm, I'm not sure about that. I think it is a really touchy subject, and there is a fine line between being inspired by something and copying it completely.
