I made a duffel bag that I loved some time ago, but my adorable little dog climbed into it to take a nap and decided to chew up the zipper instead. (You can see that one here:
http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=358614.msg4201046#msg4201046 )

So I needed another bag. This time I needed something a bit smaller - the duffel was huge. I found this awesome tutorial here at craftster and decided to give it a go, because it's different than any type of bag I have made before and I like a challenge. I had a lot of problems (because I wasn't paying attention, not because of the tutorial. It was a zipper issue.) and ended up having to trim the front and back panels. I had already sewn on the pockets so after trimming they ended up being out of proportion and the smaller patch pockets ended up tiny. I also added side pockets to the gusset. I think it turned out quite nice in spite of my issues. There is a good sized zipper pocket on the inside too.
(Edited to add a link to the tutorial: http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=42927.0#axzz2aeXLqJcP)

I also made a matching roll-up toiletries bag using this tutorial (http://www.pellonprojects.com/projects/cosmetics-case/).

So anyway, my 9-year-old son saw it and immediately wanted me to make him one in camo. I think his turned out way better and he loves it. I still need to add a removable shoulder strap with shoulder pad to his but I like the way it turned out. His is a bit bigger, 'cause I didn't have to trim his - I was paying attention. There are 5 full sized towels in there now and probably room for at least one more. I have promised him a manly toiletries bag that matches.

Love the camo bag!  What fun for your son!  Nice work.  It's true that the second one is always a bit better...we learn from our mistakes. Wink

Oh I love this.  Thank You!   Grin

I've been looking for a tutorial on making a bag just like this that I want to customize a bit.  A friend of mine is having a baby this winter and I want to sew a few things for her and the new little one.   One of the items being a diaper bag that is this style.  Simple but functional.  Having three of my own munchkins I think I have an idea of what some of the most useful options would be to add to it.   Now just to settle and decide on a fabric.....

I make soap and other "cosmetics" as defined by the FDA and in my spare time I sew.... Sewing is therapy for me in dealing with life stresses and my chronic pain.  When I hurt and can't sew, I plan what I want to sew.  I also have a great husband, three kids and three fur kids.....

Awesome job! Love the fabrics. Thanks for stuffing them with towels, it really looks nicer and gives everyone a better idea of the size of the bags.
