Thank you for creating something so wonderful! It's so much like Peake's own style that it could almost be a self-portrait. I hope you do get a chance to make casts of this, because I would absolutely love to buy one. (If you weren't in another country I'd offer to do the molding and casting for you.)

How come so few people know of Mervyn Peake? I love the Gormenghast books of course, but my favourite is a little book called "Letters from a Lost Uncle."

Thank you, Wulf!  I'll let you know when/if I ever get this into a permanent form.  And wow, I didn't expect to find someone here on Craftster who's actually read "Letters from a Lost Uncle"!  What a wacky book that is.  My favorite part is the picture of the Uncle as a baby running away from home.   Cheesy

I just realized your avatar is a Peake drawing, isn't it?

I've always looked for a copy of the Alice in Wonderland that he illustrated, but still have never found one. I've seen a few of the individual illustrations - they're brilliant.

It's the cover illo for the Overlook Press edition of "Titus Groan."  Smiley  That's my favorite edition, as it may be more definitive than some others such as the 70s Ballantine editions.  The Overlook renders Shwelters shlurred drunken shpeach phonetically and has Irma calling her brother "Bernard" even though he refers to himself as "Alfred."  Typical of him to be confusing even as to his name, perhaps "Bernard" is his middle name?  Roll Eyes

Peake's Alice was reprinted in the recent past and I grabbed a copy.  Every few years I go into a collecting frenzy and pick up a few more editions of Peake volumes.  My favorite of Peake's Alice illustrations is Haigha in his rather Prunesquallorian "Anglo-Saxon attitude."  Nobody renders hands like Peake!

AbeBooks sourced various editions of the Peake illustrated Alice:

Nearly a year later I finally got this guy cleaned up for digital scanning and now he's being scanned!  Eventually to become a permanent object instead of fragile, squishable clay!
