My niece's birthday was last month and randomly I thought that I should make her a castle play set!    I was walking through Michaels when I saw the unfinished castle and instantly remembered Patty_o_furniture Hogwarts castle set, which was just oh so totally awesome.  I knew then I should make my niece something similar, though general castle themed instead.  I scooped it up with a 50% off coupon, which made it around $13.

I took it home, sanded it and then applied 3 coats of a weathered oak stain that I had on hand.  It took a few days to do all of that, since you have to let it sit for quite a while in between stains.  After all that was said and done, I painted some bricks onto the edges and along the windows on the outside with acrylic paint and added some door details.  On the inside I added some scrapbooking paper for rugs and crests on the walls, and painted the little pull out drawer like a dungeon, where all the peg people would be stored.  Once everything was all dry, I added a coat of polyurethane to it, which I didn't really like at the end.  It would have been better if I spray coated the whole thing in a clear coat instead.  The polyurethane didn't go on very evenly, but oh well!

In between all that waiting for drying on the castle, I made her a set of peg people to go with.

She's got a queen and a king, some prince and princesses, lords and ladies, stable lads and maids, a knight and a jester.  All were done with peg people from Hobby Lobby (a set of adults and a set of kids) painted with acrylic paint and then spray clear coated.  She loved it and and her and her friends started to play with immediately, despite the fact that we were at Chuck E Cheeses.  ^_^

Thanks for looking!
