Someone had suggested that I sculpt a pangolin. How could I possibly resist? They're so nifty and adorable.

This little guy is about 6" tall, and 4" wide & long. Made with Sculpey clay over a wire armature, and painted with acrylics.

Pangolins are scaled anteaters with prehensile tails. Smiley http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pangolin

I've been wanting to use glass eyes but they're quite pricey.
What I did for this little guy is I rolled a small ball of clay, carefully sliced it in half and then baked each half-sphere. If you bake them and then press them into the rest of the soft clay of the head, you can form clay around the eyeball without distorting or nicking it. Smiley

So you bake it twice then? How do you keep the eyes from burning? Do you bake at 275 or lower than what the packaging said? When I sculpt my little
art dolls I do the baking  quick or else I burn the ears. Pm me if you have any tips for a fellow sculptor lol.

I've only done a few sculptures so I've barely got any experience under my belt, but sure is fun!
Parts that have a lot of details get baked several times actually. Sometimes things discolour a tiny bit, but the only time I've actually burned something was tall ears that could barely fit in the oven. But I paint over everything so it doesn't bother me much.

Where did you find your inspiration for him? Did you work from a photo? He's so real!

Thank you!
Awhile back I saw a taxidermy mount of a pangolin in one of my labs, and they've always looked so neat in photos. I always try to reference a little bit, helps it look like the animal its supposed to be. Smiley

You have done a really fantastic job and he is so cute! It makes me want to google Pangolins now. I have never heard of them either.
