One of the biggest projects I worked on last year was my wedding at Burning Man. We made everything ourselves!

For those who aren't familiar, Burning Man is an annual arts festival held in the Nevada desert. Some key themes are radical self-expression and radical self-reliance. It's challenging, exhilarating, exhausting, and one of the highlights of my life.

I carried a rainbow pinwheel instead of a bouquet, because flowers aren't allowed on the playa and how would they have lasted the week before anyway?

The bodice is made of metallic lycra, and all those appliques, rhinestones, and sequins were sewn on while I was wearing the top, by myself of course. I added plastic boning to keep the zipper from rippling, and the piece is lining with cotton jersey.

When we got engaged in 2011, I really had no idea what I wanted my wedding clothes to look like. Ive never worn white, and we have no traditions to honor, so I was free to wear whatever I wanted! The main idea was to dress as more fabulous versions of ourselves.

The skirt is a 1.5 circle made from washed silk dupioni. It has pockets, an elastic waistband, and a silk charmeuse lining.

Instead of a veil I made this headdress. The base is Mardi Gras beads in a silk chiffon tube, with beads and charms hanging from the back.

That's so rad to hear / read (I'll read it aloud so I can do both). My husband made some awesome movies about the wedding that I'm encouraging him to post online, but I appreciate his humility (as in humble-ness, not being humiliated).

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who decided to go colorful and different instead of the traditional white wedding dress =D Your head dress is sooo coool too! I love the pinwheel =D never would have thought of that instead of flowers but thats totally epic! Congratz!!

Congrats for making your wedding day as unique as you are!

I could not wait to see the dress since since the boots were so wonderful!  I think you will also get a lot more wear from your dress than most brides...Grin

Thank you for sharing your lovely day with us...may you have many years of adventures and exploration (and crafting!)...

Thank you for all the feedback! It was such a fun project to work on, and has helped me explore and define my own sense of style.

And one of the best parts about is it that I don't have to do it again. I loved designing the wedding, and I equally love not planning a desert wedding this year (this year I'm going low-key!).
