I've been looking at lotion and lip balm recipes lately and almost all of them call for vitamin e....does it really have that many miraculous superpowers? I notice some people refer to it for a preservative (Which I know isn't a good idea to assume that).

I'm guessing that recipes with beeswax, coconut oil, olive oil, etc would already be rich with moisturizing properties. Does Vitamin e just give it oomph or is it like that little "key" ingredient that brings it all together??

It's not a preservative, it's an antioxidant, which is different. Antioxidants extend the shelf life of oils (cause them not to go rancid as quickly), while preservatives inhibit the growth of mold/bacteria/icky stuff. Just for the antioxidant properties alone I always include Vitamin E in lotions, but it's also just good for your skin. You can buy it in oil form (look for Tocopherol Acetate) or just buy the vitamin ones in caplets and pop a few caplets to squeeze in per batch of lotion.

I found this blog/recipe to start with lotion. I like the one she has for lip balm, but I'm having a heck of a time finding cocoa butter where its not going to kill me on shipping and everything I find locally is cocoa butter mixed with other stuff, including alcohol Undecided

Hmm, have you tried these guys? They are in your state, might be cheaper shipping.

Believe it or not, their shipping is almost double what other places are. I'm going to try a beauty supply store and a health store tonight to see if I can find it. If not, I'll wait til WSP has it back in stock or just suck it up and pay the shipping. Worse case scenario is WSP and Bulk Apothecary are only a few hours away and I can use it as an excuse to visit friends.  Cheesy

Ugh, I hate when places rip you off on shipping! I like Soaper's Choice/Columbus Oil if you're buying a lot...I usually get 10 lbs of cocoa butter and 10 lbs of shea butter at a time, it knocks the price down super cheap, like $3.50 a pound or something,

$5-6 for cocoa butter but $12-18(?!?!) for shipping *scratches head*. I don't want to load up too much on supplies. I've got such bad crafting ADD lately that I don't want to build up a stock for one craft only to turn around and start something else in a week. I just finally finished potholders that I started in December Roll Eyes

Wow, that's awful! I know what you mean, I'm currently downsizing some of my craft supplies for crafts I don't do much anymore.
