A while back a friend got some cupcakes with these really cute flowers on them, so I asked him to save all the toppers because I knew I could do something with them. Finally. Today I figured out a way to make them into hair clips. I figured I can't be the only weird person who saves these, so here's a tutorial for you! By the way, please excuse the horrible pics and my dirty fingers. Had to use my ipad to take the pics as my phone camera is broken and I dyed my hair yesterday and it stained my hands. And I really don't have a Jay Leno chin, it's just the incredibly awkward angle. >_<
First, you will need:
-a work surface, like a cutting board
-monkey wrench or small vise grips
-a razor blade, paint scraper, or box cutter
-clear nail polish
-scrap of sandpaper
First, using the wire cutters, cut off as much of the part that sticks into the cupcake as possible.
Second, place the topper into the vise grips or wrench to stabilize it, and use the razor blade to (carefully!) cut off the remaining stump.
Third, use the scrap of sandpaper to sand the part you just cut smooth(ish).
Fourth, use the razor blade to cut a groove about n the width of a bobby pin in the back of the topper. You'll want to sand this, too.
Next, place a small piece of tape in between the legs of a bobby pin sticky side up. (The top of a bobby pin is the wavy side)
Then, use the nail polish to paint the groove and the approximate area where the tape will be. Place the bobby pin into the groove and press the tape down on all edges. Then paint over the edges of the tape.
Now wait a bit and make sure everything is dry, and voila! Cute new hair accessories!
