For the Summer Nerd Games I made this 1:48 scale model of The Room of Roots from the novel “Titus Groan.”

The Room was once filled with soil and a tree grew from the window hundreds of years ago.  Now the soil is gone and the roots only inhabit the room, with the dead Tree protruding from the face of the Castle wall.  The Ladies Cora and Clarice, idiot twin sisters of the Earl of Gormenghast, spent three years painting the roots in the hope of luring birds to roost and nest in them, a project which ended in utter failure.    But the sisters can still enjoy sitting out on the Tree, hundreds of feet in the air.  Steerpike, who has ambitious plans of moving up in the Castle hierarchy, is lurking in the doorway.

Gormenghast, settings and characters invented by Mervyn Peake.  His website: http://www.mervynpeake.org/

Thank you!  Peake's descriptions are so clear and detailed, it's easy to get a good mental picture of the scene.

Thank you!  The Gormenghast books are full of this kind of fantastic image, presented in Peake's unique dense descriptive prose.  They aren't easy books to read, but well worth it.  Smiley
