I haven't swapped in a long time, but I've been wanting to create an i-spy quilt. I thought it would great to organize a swap for fabric, but I'm not sure it would really work. Could you please give me your opinions, and/or direct me to specific guidelines that might apply? My concerns are:

1. We would only be swapping swatches of fabric. There would be no crafting at all. Any quilts people made with the fabric they received would be outside of the swap. Are supplies-only type swaps legit?

2. Each person would be sending to every other person in the swap. That means they would all have everybody's addresses. Obviously they would know that going in, but is this against the rules or something?

What I envision is that each person would send two (maybe more?) different swatches of fabric to every other participant. They would be mailed regular mail, and I would limit participants to U.S.-only so that the mail would be fast and cheap. I would also limit the number of participants, probably to around 20 or 24, if there was even that much interest.

Thanks for your input!

Yes, there are supply-only swaps. There have been fat quarter swaps recently.

As for US-only, I don't know about that. I think you may have to let everyone in, and the US folks can request to swap only with other US people.

You can do US only if you like, but there will probably be some unhappy people. Shipping to Canada for small packages (first class mail) is usually just as cheap as shipping to the US, since there is no tracking available so no added fee for that, so at times when I want "US only" I've actually made it North America only. But it truly is up to you.

Multiple partners would be fine, but I don't think you want to have every person sending to 19 other people in a 20 person group. That would be insane for keeping track of and for shipping costs. Maybe think about groups of 6 or something? I've run a ton of mult-partner swaps so have some experience doing this, and it can be a bear to keep track of.

It's fine to do this type of swap, but you might consider what MareMare said about forming smaller groups. As organizer, it's up to you whether or not you want to have a US only swap, a North American swap, or open it to all countries.

Shipping will be less expensive with this type of swap, but because it's not a papercraft swap, tracking numbers will be required for all packages shipped within the US.

Is it a Craftster rule that tracking numbers must be used? I figured it would be pretty cheap/painless to re-send bits of fabric if the envelope gets lost.

Yes, delivery confirmation must be used on all swaps except for papercrafting swaps. It's in the rules.

I know they do these kinds of swaps on Swap-Bot, where everyone sends to everyone else, even if there are 20+ people in the swap. And there are no DC#s involved. I left that site for personal reasons, and I don't know if our beloved C-ster wants me promoting other sites on here, but it is an option if you want to run this kind of thing in the manner you were hoping.
