Hello everyone! I don't often post on this board, but this time I crafted something that seems to fit. A cousin of mine and his girlfriend recently lost their dogs, and I wanted to give them something to cherish.

I don't often draw portraits, so I used a grid technique to transfer from some pictures. Here's how:

It was a challenge to put both dogs in a portrait, since I had actually never seen the puggle (Cherry) and there were very few pictures to go by. The only one in focus was a side view, so I looked up lots of puggle photos on flicker and tried to blend them together in my brain. I found the photo I liked the best, and put it next to a photo of the shepherd (Kota), and did my best to make them the appropriate relative heights. I printed it out, and drew a grid on it based on what would fit on my final paper:

I drew another grid with slightly larger squares in my sketchbook, and did a rough outline of the dogs. I had to guess some to have the puggle be standing, but at least it didn't have a million spots! Once I had the sketch, I went over the main lines in ink and erased the pencil:

I then used tracing paper to ink over the design again, and rubbed graphite all over the back of the tracing paper over the lines.

I placed that paper on my final page, drew over the lines with a sharp pencil to transfer the image, tidied up the graphite, filled it in with watercolor and marker, and inked over the lines. Voil!

Thanks for looking!
