So I earned a $25. Target gift certificate from my credit card so I treated myself to a new package of Sharpies - with the "Glam 80's" colors, 25 markers in all.

I made a silk scarf this way but I have a bunch of old white tees that are not so crispy white. I decided to try this to see if it is something I could do with my Pre-K kids. I traced the inside of a roll of masking tape for the outer circles and freehanded the inner ones.

I make about 8 - 10 sets at a time and then start dripping the rubbing alcohol.

I prop yogurt cups under the front of shirt so it doesn't transfer to the back.

Watch the magic!

Here is the front of the shirt - almost completed. This has taken me about 3 days so far - I wait about an hour before dripping another group of circles. The rubbing alcohol does evaporate but it smells so keep the window open.

I'm working on the sides and back this long weekend and I will post of pic of the finished shirt when I'm done.

Two notes - The dark colors seem to spread the most - blue, black, dark purple and red. The "Glam" colors don't seem to react as much. Maybe they will on a silk scarf. I used all of the colors. Well, not brown yet but I will add it somewhere just so I can say I used all of the colors in the pack. I may run out to get a mustard yellow marker - I like adding that shade.

I know this has been done before but it is so fun. I think I may do this on the other old white tees I have collected - I can wash my windows with something else - and then cut them up for tee shirt scarves.

Thanks for looking!

Do you use just regular rubbing alcohol?

Yes. For the silk scarf, it is recommended that you use the 91% kind, so that's what I have on hand.
I'm not sure what's recommended for cotton, but the 91% seems to work. I might grab a bottle of the 70% (or whatever the next one is) to try it out.

That looks cool--and it's a fun idea! I want to try this now. Maybe on a doll-sized tee shirt? Will you model the finished shirt for us, Smmarrt?

I'm almost finished. Just need to fill in a few blank spots.
As for modeling? Well, let's wait and hope for the best.

Thanks so much for posting this project!  I wanted to make one ever since I saw one on Pinterest, but didn't b/c it just seemed too involved.  But you make it sound easy!

I think I will make some shirts for my girls now!  Cheesy

And just for you, Leslie, here is a photo of me wearing the completed shirt. That's my sis, Amy, as we're saying good-bye. Thanks to the random stranger who took the pic for us.

The shirt is pinker than this photo shows. Most of the white spots on the shirt are now pink. So maybe I missed a step and need to heat set before washing? Anyway, I will do this with my Pre-K kids next week.

And my sister and I found plain white scarves to we each bought two. That'll be my next project.

This is great. I am going to let my teen daughter do this. She's been wanting to "tie dye," but that was too complicated a process. This will be very fun for her, and very easy.

Thanks for sharing it!

As a side question, are circles the only way this works? I'm into "swirlies" myself, and could easily fancy doing some "swirlies" on some of my t-shirts. :-D
