Couple of other hints: There are often charts with estimates of the amount of fabric you need for various types of furniture at the fabric store and also online.  Also, the store may cut your foam for you and they will likely have an electric knife with a guide so it will cut square to the sitting surface; there may be a charge, but not always.

What about sewing a slip cover thing instead of safety pin?

Long rectangle with Velcro to close it. Then when it's dirty you can wash it.
