I made this for the recent Edward Gorey swap, as part of a tea set (tea box here). It was tough figuring out how to translate the distinctive pen and ink style of Gorey into something I could sew on my machine, but it was worth it!

I started by lightly sketching the bird with pencil, and stitching over it slowly. Then I dropped the feed dogs, and ran over the outline once more to give it a sketchy look, and added in the eye and wing/breast shading. The foliage and border are some fancy stitches my machine came with!

And here's something nifty...

It's reversible! I used white thread on the bobbin so it would show on the black backing fabric.

With my favorite mug, for scale:

Oh, and here's the original image I was working from!

This is so cool. Aaah, I don't know how you have the patience for freehand machine embroidery.

This is so cool! I love the reversible quilting! The striped binding is great, can you tell me the name/designer please?

Thank you!

The striped binding is great, can you tell me the name/designer please?

Unfortunately I can't. I made the binding myself from some thrift store curtains.

Oh ok, very clever of you! Cheesy I'm always collecting fabric for stripey binding, Riley Blake has some cool diagonal stripey in gray and white in their current Little Red Riding Hood line!

This is really nicely done!  I love your drawn interpretation of Gorey's bird and the reversible motif is sheer genius!  Your partner must have been over the moon!  Nice work!
