While I was making the baby quilt for sweets4ever's new baby, I decided I should make one for her older son too! I hadnít made him one when he was born so I thought it would be fun to send them both along so he wouldnít be left out. I happened to have a really fun rocket panel in my stash, along with a remnant I had picked up of this ray gun fabric.

The colors seemed to work together, so I pieced this bright quilt top together by cutting the panel in two, rearranging it and bulking it out with some strip pieced checkerboard.

For the back I created a  simple chevron out of half square triangles to be a focal point, and used up some of the leftover strips to create some more checkerboard.

I quilted around the squares in the panel, up and down the checkerboard, and then I outlined 3 of the rockets in each panel.  All throughout this project I had been trying to figure out some way of using the blue stripe fabric, but never quite fit it in, but I realized it would work ok for the binding!

Iím not sure if Iím pleased or embarrassed that all of the fabrics for this came out of my stash!

Awww, great idea to make him feel all loved too! Sometimes older siblings feel left out when there's a new addition to the family & this is surely going to prevent that from happening! So cute!  Wink

Really fun!  I would never in a million years have created that layout, and I absolutely love it.  The checkered panels really off-set the rocket ship panels well, creating a great asymmetrical balance.  Love it!

I cannot explain to you how much he LOVES this quilt!  I took some photos of him opening it.  I'll upload them in the morning!

Was seriously so sweet of you to think of him.

I just love the way you used the rocket ship pieces with the other materials, a great way to make it fill up the "empty" spaces.  I think it looks better than a solid sheet of just the rockets.

It's beautiful.  I loved how you divided the panel and added to the front (and back).  It looks so fun.

What a wonderful gift!
The colors go very well together and the fabric is just perfect. I like the way you choose to put the pieces together.

Thanks! The rocket panel was a little bit odd in that it was a rectangular panel situated horizontally--wide rather than tall, and I definitely wanted the quilt to me laid out more portrait than landscape, if that makes sense, so that led to the way I cut it and pieced it Smiley

This is actually a photo of him on his baby brother's quilt, but he was just giddy over the entire quilt situation in general. Grin  He was rolling on them and shouting, "We got new blankies!" Cheesy  Needless to say, Mare did an amazing job.

I have some more photos to upload, but I've got one kid napping, one kid nursing and I'm supposed to be on a conference call in a few minutes. Cheesy  I'll be back!

Another great design of a wonderfully reversible quilt.  And I do love that propeller ray gun fabric: recently bought a yard or so of it myself!

I think it's a) a wonderful, fun, and thoughtful gift and b) great that you used your stash fabrics.  That's why we collect fabrics - to use when the muse is upon us!

I love the rocket ship panel so much.  I know you said it was part of your stash, but is there any chance you remember who made it?

Thanks guys!

Aliped--I actually was able to find it on a search! It came up as Spacebots by Jill Webster for Clothworks Fabrics.

I haven't purchased from this etsy shop, but I read their blog and would consider them reputable from what I know.
